Shisanjianfang Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Turpan-Hami region. The naming section is located in the vicinity north of Huokou 16 km southeast of Xigou, Shisanjianfang Station, Shanshan County, Xinjiang. Named by Zhai Renjie, Zheng Jiajian and Tong Yongsheng in 1978.
Lithology and Thickness
Lower part, grayish white, gray and grayish red conglomerate, pebbly sandstone and muddy sandstone; Middle part, grayish green, dark red and gray sandstone and mudstone with marlstone or conglomerate lenses, generally rich in calcareous concretions; Upper part, mainly gray and brownish yellow sandy conglomerate, pebbly sandstone and marlstone and fresh-water limestone. The thickness is more than 270 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It possibly conformably or disconformably overlies the Late Paleocene Dabu Fm.
Upper contact
Unconformably underlies the Late Eocene-Oligocene Taoshuyuanzi Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is mainly distributed in an area south of the Shisanjianfang and Dabu stations in the eastern part of the Turpan basin; it is not reported in the western part of the basin.

Fossils
This formation yields mammals such as Anagalida, Notoungulata and Perissodactyles, and the main elements are Rhombomys turpanensis, Anatolostylops Dubius, Heptodon tianshanensis, Coryphodon sp. and Hyopsodus sp.
